I am sure many won't share my opinion, but as far as I am concerned the 30-06 is the best Alaskan gun. I am sure some people will think this is too small, but I have heard the 30-06 has killed more bears then every other caliber combined. The .338 Win Mag and the .375 H & H are both very popular rounds for Alaska as well. I own a .338, and have shot a .375. I prefer the .375 over my .338 because it has less recoil and substantially more energy at close range. The recoil on my .338 is so bad that it made me develop a flinch. I prefer the 30-06 to both of these calibers because I can shoot it more effectively. It is also relatively light, has ample knockdown power, and is cheap to shoot. There is something to be said for ability to place a shot over energy. Just my 2 cents.

I was thinking the same thing when I moved here. I pretty much shot everything the lower 48 had to offer with a 30-06 with no problems. I don't tend to flinhc with the 338 ultra, but I like big rifles and handguns. Shot placement is the most important in almost any situation over power, but it is nice to have both

Rifle in Alaska
I can understand not liking the kick, but my theory is you should be packing a rifle not necessarily big enough for what you are hunting but what might be hunting you.
In fact I think I saw that on a bumper sticker!  All kiding aside, I guess it would mainly on what area you were hunting and what you were going after. Having a couple of rifles is probably the best option. Maybe a .338 and a 30-06 Just my 2 cents. What does everyone else think?
